A variety of Tibetan tribes, either of Tibetan stock or drawing from Tibetan influence, are pronounced in the mountains at the eastern fringe of the Tibetan plateau. The unusually dense and steep mountains have in the past isolated people within – even inhabitants of neighbouring valleys didn’t intermingle much – giving rise to a tapestry of ethnic enclaves that share a broad linguistic and religious heritage but have evolved distinct cultural and lifestyle characteristics. The differing terrains, ranging from lush to arid mountains, have further influenced the divergent costumes, beliefs, superstition, food and building styles. Below is a gallery of pictures that showcase some of the sights we see during our epic Tibetan Tribes tour.
