A cluster of remote nature reserves in northeast Sichuan offer some of the best opportunities for watching wildlife in the Himalayas. Among the hidden gorges and towering peaks, the mountains are home to animals such as giant panda, blue sheep, black bear, wild boar, leopard cat, and the largest variety of pheasants in the world. Yet the star of our journey to the upper reaches of the Tangjia river is the takin, an enigmatic and strange animal that seems like it’s constituted from a mountain goat, antelope, and buffalo. During our tour – The Takin Trail – we will follow the takins as they migrate from the valleys in the winter to the grasslands above the tree-line, where large herds of them gather at the mountaintop at around 3,400 metres. Elsewhere in the region we also do some birdwatching, trek in gorges and underground tunnels, and commune with traditional Chinese peasants – we can even stay with farming families in their large farmhouses.
